LATEST NEWS FROM THE BEECHES

Our daughter has complex needs and has been attending Beeches for the last five years. Beeches were very supportive during the transition period from school to day care and definitely went the extra mile to ensure she was happy and content. Communication and feedback from Beeches is excellent and the staff are always supportive, flexible and accommodating when varying situations have arisen. Every morning she looks forward to seeing her friends and misses it during holidays. Beeches continually plays a vital role in her happiness health and well being.

Elizabeth,
Parent

I have been involved for a number of years in delivering ‘Personal, Social and Life Skills’ courses to groups at The Beeches Resource Centre and also to groups that travel in for classes at SERC Lisburn campus. In my experience, the Resource Centre team provides a warm, educational and nurturing environment that aims to meet the needs of the clients at a personal level. Within the college, the Resource Centre clients and support staff are fully involved in student life, taking part enthusiastically in classroom-based activities, engaging with other students, participating in lively team challenges and enhancing their IT skills with interactive learning games. It is evident that there is a real desire to grow and learn together, with individual needs being taken into account at all times. The ethos of ‘Lifelong Learning’ is actively encouraged by the Resource Centre staff and fully embraced by the clients

Louise Glass,
Lecturer, SERC Co-Ordinator, Learning Enhancement Programme

The Beeches clients have been involved in many Disability Sport Ni programmes through the Inclusive Sports & Leisure Project in Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council. They have taken part enthusiastically in many sports including tennis, volleyball, and Boccia to name but a few; and have been a joy to coach over the past 6years! We have built up a great working relationship with The Beeches, which has helped us to develop programmes that benefit their clients physically, socially and emotionally. I must commend the staff for recognising the importance of physical activity for their clients and actively seeking engagement through these sports programmes. I look forward to welcoming more clients from The Beeches in the future!

Coleen Connolly,
Inclusive Sports & Leisure Officer, Disability Sport NI (ABC Council Area)

My job involves developing opportunities for people with all disabilities to engage in physical activity. I have been working in partnership with The Beeches Resource Centre, Aghalee for over 9 years. During this time, The Beeches has been very receptive to engaging in all types of physical activity. For example in the last 3 years a number of the trainees have been walking on a regular basis with the Step by Step Walking Programme, using step counters and accessible recording booklets. In 2016 nine of the walkers completed Assistant Walk Leader Training. In March 2018 eight of them completed an Introduction to First Aid. Four trainees have also been trained as Boccia leaders. This is also evidence of The Beeches’ commitment to training opportunities for the trainees. Yet perhaps the most important feature of The Beeches is the warm, welcoming, happy atmosphere where everyone is equal and feels at home – including visitors like me. My involvement with The Beeches’ trainees, staff and management has been a privilege and a joy.

Disability Physical Activity Co-Ordinator
